Job Description

My client is seeking a commercially mature number two to the General counsel to complete a variety of interesting work and be trained as part of a succession plan. Insurance, Senior in-house Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, General Commercial, Non-contentious, board advisory, contract drafting.

My client is seeking a commercially mature number two to the General Counsel to contribute to an astounding variety of interesting projects, and be trained as part of the legal department's succession plan. Insurance, Senior in-house Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, General Commercial, Non-contentious, board advisory, contract drafting.

A truly extraordinary opportunity exists for a non-contentious insurance lawyer to immerse themselves in one of the world's leading (re)insurance groups in a very responsible position.

You will be the assistant / deputy to the general counsel and perform a wide variety of tasks to advise the Board, whilst also managing and mitigating legal risk across the business. You will need to establish strong relationships with Board / C-suite management across a range of disciplines such as Claims, Underwriting, Marketing, Business development, Compliance, IT, Finance, Operations, etc. You will be tasked with leading certain crucial business projects, and also manage external counsel when needed.

You will need to also establish and maintain strong relationships across the wider group with other legal and compliance teams, and contribute significantly to intergroup strategic projects.

The work will have a large proportion of general commercial duties, but also insurance specific elements. You must, therefore, have excellent knowledge of non-contentious work in insurance such as regulatory, transactional and product development exposure. Any in-house secondment experience would be advantageous, as well as knowledge of insurance specific contracts such as contract development / drafting with DUA's (Delegated Underwriting Authority) MGA's (Managing General Agents) TPA's (Third Party Administrators), and / or other intermediaries. Finally you will also contribute and advise on any pre-litigation / contentious work as necessary, very likely in conjunction with external counsel.

Finally, the opportunity is designed specifically with a view towards succession planning the General Counsel. This individual has exceptional international exposure and extensive post-qualification experience, and is well-equipped to pass on the skills and knowledge needed to make the step-up. They will be providing direct mentoring, sponsorship and leadership to this hire to effectively prepare them for this transition.

Please get in touch if you are interested in discussing this specific opportunity, or in having a confidential, career management consultation.
