Area Business Manager (Field Based)

Main Purpose:

Responsible for the successful delivery of our company business objectives including implementation and continual review of a tailored engagement strategy, profitability and service for a high value region.

Key Performance Areas:

  • The Area Business Manager will be a resilient and tenacious individual who is adaptable to change and will thrive in a fast-paced environment with an ability to set a vision and get the right people in the right places to deliver on that vision and drive the business continually forwards
  • Passion, energy and drive, a real self-starter who can engage with the teams and make tough commercial decisions when needed
  • Manage the overall operation of your area to meet profit targets within a £4million devolved P&L account
  • Understand key profit drivers, and direct all efforts to ensuring a profitable return from the Area
  • Understand the operation, the planning process and all other business system processes and ensure consistent application of Standard Operating Procedures across the Area
  • Achieve service standards as stipulated in the contract
  • Manage, motivate and lead geographically diverse employee groups within the area to maximise their performance and productivity
  • Ensure all employees working in your area of responsibility are fully aware of company policies, procedures and contractual requirements
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders including MOJ, Court employees, Prison staff and Governors in order to influence them positively towards supporting objectives


  • General business management knowledge and business unit management experience
  • People management experience within a unionised business
  • Able to operate effectively in a multi-site environment
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
  • Proven persuader and influencer
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills
  • Driving Licence
  • Computer literacy
  • Able to achieve security clearance to enhanced CRB and MoJ enhanced check status, possibly required to enter into MoD vetting additionally
  • Self-motivated and tenacious
  • Highly confident in challenging the status-quo to positively influence and support achievement of business objectives


  • Commercial experience, understanding a contract and operating within that to achieve profitability
  • Likely to have either operational and/or logistics experience in private sector environment
  • O Licence holder, or be willing to undertake training to achieve O licence accreditation, holder of CPC National Passenger Transport and Road Haulage or willing to undertake training (PCV or freight national)
