Behind the Scenes at Lloyd’s 2018 IntoWork Conference

On Friday 20 July, 11 of Oliver James’s best and brightest headed to Lloyd’s to support a group of minds that may just hold the key to tomorrow’s insurance market.

The occasion? Lloyd’s 2018 IntoWork Conference – a vital component of the Lloyd’s Community Programme – hosted by The Brokerage at Lloyd’s. The conference would seek to empower and educate the student population on an industry full of opportunity, yet still not widely entered by this generation’s jobseekers. In fact, a reported 8 out of 10 millennials are simply unfamiliar with insurance as a career path.

Interactive workshops, group discussions and insights were delivered on the day by the likes of Markel International, Aon and Enstar, while our consultants volunteered their time in several mock interviews and assessment sessions. Among the many topics covered, we explained the variety of career paths offered by the insurance sector, as well as how young people can confidently communicate their skills to get a head start in the financial services sector. We also helped the participants explore the value of building a personal brand, and how this can be utilised effectively at interview.

“Initiatives like the Lloyd’s IntoWork Conference are the perfect opportunity for us as a recruitment firm to give back, enabling us to share our expertise and market knowledge with young people at the beginning of their careers. This type of outreach is also critical for attracting the next generation to the insurance market; without it, I may not have had the chance to speak to so many dynamic young people passionate about the world of work,” said Melina Golfels, one of the Oliver James consultants who attended the IntoWork Conference.

On our involvement, Kate Stuart, relationship manager for Lloyd’s Community Programme, commented “The support we received from Oliver James’s volunteers was absolutely invaluable. They directly assisted our students with interview questions and provided feedback on their interactions during the group case study. Our students had not had the chance to meet professionals before, and for many, this opportunity showed them how to best present themselves in a professional setting, and to capitalise on the different career options available. Without the commitment of Oliver James and our other volunteers, this conference would not have had the impact it did.”
